Mercy Day September 24th

Published on September 23, 2022

Mercy Day is celebrated annually on the 24th September as the day on which Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, opened the House of Mercy on Baggot Street, Dublin, and dedicated it to Our Lady of Mercy. Birr is blessed to have had a Mercy presence since 1841 when Catherine McCauley and her sisters  arrived in the town. It was her last foundation before her death, today that presence continues with the Sisters in River walk Birr. While the first priority of every Sister of Mercy is prayer, the retired Sisters in the Convent make this their principal apostolate. As we celebrate Mercy Day on Saturday we look back with gratitude on the good work the Sisters have done in our parish in Education, Health Care, and Pastoral Work.
